Partnering with Second Harvest Food Bank, Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley is boosting its visibility through a series of video public service announcements produced by Wohlmut Media Services. The heart-warming plea for food donations features characters from the Ballet's production of "The Nutcracker." The series comprises four spots of 30 and 60 seconds in English and Spanish.

Production presented some challenges. For one thing, all spots were shot on location at the Food Bank's warehouse. Typical of a working warehouse, there was a lot of wild noise and environmental issues to contend with. Yet the WMS team managed to finish production in half the time allotted, thanks in part to director talent and diplomacy.

In addition, the Spanish versions had to match the exact length of the English versions. So WMS cleverly cut some lines from the Spanish scripts without altering the message.

The value-add extended to creative as well. To overcome the drab locale, DP Jim Detro manipulated the lighting to include welcome splashes of color. And it was director Tom Wohlmut's idea to get the Mouse King's army to squeak like mice. The result was a subtle audio background that makes the spots even more compelling to watch.

Ballet publicist Lee Kopp said of the production, "From top-to-bottom, this has been one of the most exciting cooperative efforts I have ever been a part of."

"I expected a full-day shoot, but was happily surprised when the amazing WMS team smoothly wrapped it up in only half a day! Director Tom Wohlmut and DP Jim Detro work together so well it's like they talk in shorthand to each other. They trust themselves to get the job done right with a minimum of wear-and-tear on the talent and client."
